How Often Should You Water Indoor Plants in South Africa? (Stop Using a Schedule)

How Often Should You Water Indoor Plants in South Africa? (Stop Using a Schedule)

If you’ve ever Googled “how often should I water indoor plants”, you’re not alone. The honest answer is: there is no perfect schedule. Light, temperature, pot size, soil, and even wind/aircon change how fast a plant dries out.

The good news: there’s a simple way to water correctly every time.

The best method: Water based on soil (not the calendar)

Use the finger test:

  • Stick your finger 3–5cm into the soil (about to your first knuckle).
  • If it feels moist: don’t water.
  • If it feels dry: water thoroughly until it drains, then empty the tray.

Important: Most indoor plants die from overwatering, not underwatering.

What changes watering needs the most?

1) Light

  • Bright indirect light: dries faster (more watering)
  • Low light: dries slower (less watering)

2) Season (South Africa)

  • Summer: more evaporation = check more often
  • Winter: slower growth = water less

3) Pot size

  • Small desk pots: dry fast
  • Large floor pots: dry slow

4) Soil + drainage

If your pot has no drainage holes, it’s easier to overwater. If soil stays wet for days, reduce watering and improve drainage.

Easy watering cheat sheet (by plant type)

Drought-tolerant (water least)

  • ZZ Plant
  • Snake Plant
  • Succulents / cacti

Rule: only water when the pot is properly dry.

Moderate (most common indoor plants)

  • Monstera
  • Philodendron
  • Pothos / Devil’s Ivy
  • Rubber Plant
  • Dracaena

Rule: water when the top 3–5cm is dry.

Thirstier (needs more frequent checks)

  • Peace Lily
  • Ferns (especially in heat/aircon)

Rule: don’t let these dry out completely.

How to water correctly (the safe method)

  • Water slowly until water runs out the bottom.
  • Let it drain fully.
  • Empty the tray/cache pot after 10–15 minutes.
