🌱 What to sow (and when) in South Africa
☀️ Summer sowing
(warmer soils, frost-free or after last frost)
Zinnia – quick colour, great for cutting; sow Sep–Jan (earlier on the coast).
Marigold – heat-tough bedding; sow Sep–Dec.
Cosmos – airy, pollinator-friendly; sow Sep–Nov.
Sunflower – statement stems; sow Sep–Jan in batches.
Gomphrena, Celosia, Portulaca – drought-wise choices for hot spots.
(Note: Calendula actually prefers cooler conditions — see winter list.)
❄️ Winter / cool-season sowing
(shorter days, cooler nights)
Pansy & Viola – dependable winter colour; sow Feb–Apr.
Calendula – cool-season workhorse; sow Feb–May, again Jul–Aug in mild zones.
Sweet Pea – classic cut flower; sow Feb–Apr (give support early).
Iceland Poppy – delicate blooms; sow Feb–Apr in trays.
Nemesia & Diascia – South African favourites for transition seasons.
Regional tip:
Western Cape (winter-rainfall) can sow cool-season flowers earlier for autumn colour.
Highveld: sow late summer/early autumn and avoid deep-winter frost on young seedlings.
🌼 How to succeed from seed
Prepare the bed or tray: fine, free-draining medium; moisten before sowing.
Sow shallow: many seeds need light — cover lightly or not at all (check packet).
Keep even moisture: mist or bottom-water; avoid waterlogging.
Thin & feed: thin to spacing; feed lightly once true leaves appear.
Succession sowing: re-sow every 2–3 weeks for a longer display.

❓ Quick FAQs
Direct-sow or tray-sow?
Large, fast growers (zinnia, sunflower, cosmos) direct-sow after frost. Fine seed (pansy, poppy) starts better in trays.
How much sun?
Aim for 5–6+ hours. In very hot zones, give tender winter seedlings afternoon shade.
How long to flowers?
Fast summer annuals: 6–10 weeks.
Cool-season pansies/violas: 10–14 weeks, depending on temperature.
