How to plant Amaryllis bulbs

Plant in fertile, well-draining soil in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Mix compost into the planting area and place the bulb with the roots facing downward. Leave the neck and upper portion of the bulb above the soil surface. Space garden-grown bulbs approximately 10–15 cm apart.

Water thoroughly after planting and then allow the bulb to settle for seven to ten days. Once active growth appears, water regularly while allowing excess water to drain freely. Never leave container-grown bulbs standing in water.

Amaryllis care after flowering

Feed during active growth with a balanced bulb or flowering-plant fertiliser. Keep the foliage growing after flowering because the leaves replenish the bulb for the following season. Reduce watering naturally as the foliage yellows and the bulb enters winter dormancy.

Bulbs may remain in well-drained soil or be lifted and stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Monitor young growth for snails, slugs and amaryllis caterpillars.
