Bring spectacular summer colour to your home and garden with Amaryllis Symphony Double Ragtime. This variety produces flaming red, fully double flowers and is valued for bold colour and luxurious layered petals.

Amaryllis, botanically known as Hippeastrum, is one of the easiest flowering bulbs to grow in South Africa. It performs beautifully in containers and well-drained garden beds, producing impressive flowers only a few weeks after active growth begins.

How to plant Amaryllis bulbs

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, well-draining soil. Loosen the soil and mix in compost before planting. Position the bulb with its roots facing downward and leave the neck and upper portion of the bulb above the soil surface. Space bulbs approximately 10–15 cm apart.

Water thoroughly after planting, then allow the bulb to settle for about seven to ten days before watering again. Once growth is visible, keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Container-grown bulbs should be planted in pots with good drainage holes, and excess water should be emptied from saucers.

Growing and aftercare

Feed during active growth with a balanced bulb or flowering-plant fertiliser. Continue watering while the foliage remains green, as the leaves replenish the bulb for the next flowering season. Gradually reduce watering when the leaves yellow and the bulb enters dormancy.

Bulbs may remain in well-drained soil or be lifted once dormant. Store lifted bulbs in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place until replanting. Protect new growth from snails, slugs and amaryllis caterpillars.
