Dahlias are shipped as single tubers with a minimum of one eye guaranteed. If you’re not ready to plant upon arrival, store tubers in a cool, dry, dark place until planting time.

Planting Information

Plant dahlias after the last spring frost, once soil temperatures reach around 15 °C. Choose a rich, well-drained flower bed or large planter. Loosen soil to a depth of 30 cm and enrich with compost and all-purpose granular fertiliser. Place the tuber, eye or sprout facing upwards, about 8 cm below the surface. Backfill, press down firmly to eliminate air pockets, then water well. Ensure containers have good drainage.

Tips for Growing Dahlias

  • Avoid overwatering newly planted tubers—only water once at planting, then again when shoots emerge.

  • Water at the base and keep foliage dry to reduce disease risk. Deep water once or twice weekly, letting the top 2.5 cm of soil dry between waterings.

  • Feed with organic, water-soluble fertiliser every 3–4 weeks until March, then stop to better preserve tubers over winter.

  • Deadhead regularly just above a leaf node to prolong flowering.

  • Cutting long stems encourages bushier growth and more blooms.

  • Dahlias don’t reliably grow from seed—preserve and propagate your favourites via tubers.

  • In most parts of South Africa, tubers may stay in the ground over winter and resprout—lift and store only in colder areas or after frost.
