How to plant Dahlia tubers
Choose a sunny position with rich, well-draining soil. Loosen the soil and mix in compost before planting. Lay the tuber or clump with the growing point facing upward and cover it with approximately 8 cm of soil. Water once after planting, then avoid excessive watering until shoots emerge.
Growing and care
Once active growth begins, water deeply at the base and allow the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Taller varieties may need staking. Feed during active growth with a balanced flowering-plant fertiliser and remove spent blooms regularly to encourage continued flowering.
For cut flowers, harvest when the blooms are almost fully open. Cutting longer stems encourages branching and additional flowers.
