These premium roots, available for shipment starting June 2025, promise to infuse your garden with a timeless sense of grace and sophistication.

Planting Guide for South Africa

Best Planting Time:

  • In South Africa, the ideal planting window is during the cooler months. Although June marks winter across most regions, the dormant state of the peony roots means they can be planted immediately in areas with a pronounced winter chill.
  • In milder climates, consider giving the roots a brief chilling period (about a week in a cool, dark place) before planting to simulate the natural winter dormancy.

Site & Soil Preparation:

  • Location: Choose a spot that receives full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Ensure the soil is well-draining and enriched with organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is optimal.
  • Spacing: Plant the roots at least 90 cm (3 feet) apart to allow ample room for growth and air circulation.

Planting Instructions:

  1. Digging the Hole: Create a hole about twice as wide as the root mass and deep enough to accommodate the roots comfortably.
  2. Positioning the Roots: Place each peony root so that the 4–5 eyes are facing upward. Cover with a shallow layer of soil—approximately 5 cm (2 inches) deep—to protect the eyes while allowing them to emerge.
  3. Watering: After planting, water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. Keep the soil consistently moist during the initial growth period, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  4. Mulching: Apply an organic mulch around the planting area. This will help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition.

Extra Tips & Tricks:

  • Frost Protection: In frost-prone areas, consider adding an extra layer of mulch or using a frost cloth during severe cold snaps to protect the young roots.
  • Fertilization: Once new growth appears in spring, feed your peonies with a balanced fertilizer to boost flowering potential.
  • Maintenance: Remove any faded blooms to encourage healthier growth for the following season, and keep an eye out for common pests or fungal diseases.

Embrace the elegance of the Gardenia Peony and enjoy a garden filled with vibrant, long-lasting blooms year after year.
