Bigleaf Hydrangea | Deep red-purple mophead blooms

‘Royal Red Purple®™’ is a striking bigleaf (mophead) hydrangea cultivar known for its large, richly-coloured flower heads in shades of deep red-purple through to magenta. With sturdy upright stems, lush dark green foliage and excellent branching, this cultivar creates a bold statement in borders, containers and as a cut or dried flower shrub.

Plant Care

Sun: Partial shade (best: morning sun / afternoon shade). Shelter from harsh midday sun.
Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained. Although mophead hydrangeas are often affected by soil pH, this cultivar maintains vivid red-purple flowers especially in neutral to slightly alkaline soils.
Water: Moderate — keep the root-zone evenly moist, especially during hot or dry spells and when container-grown.
Fertilizer: Balanced feed in spring; optional light top-up mid-summer to sustain bloom.
Pruning: Light only — remove spent heads and dead or weak stems after flowering. Avoid heavy pruning, as mopheads flower on old wood.
Top tip: Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature; avoid overhead watering during strong midday sun to protect blooms.
