Ornamental Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is a cool-season showstopper grown for its frilly, cabbage-like heads in brilliant shades of Pink, White or Red. A florist favourite and garden gem, it brings bold texture, colour, and structure to flower beds, pots, and winter bouquets — just when the rest of the garden takes a nap!

🌱 Growing Conditions

Plant Size:

  • Height: 60–90 cm

  • Width: 30–45 cm

Climate:

  • Thrives in cool to cold weather — perfect for autumn and winter

  • Needs cool nights for best colour development

  • Grows beautifully in Western Cape, Gauteng, KZN Midlands, Free State, and other cooler areas

  • Frost-hardy once established

Soil Requirements:

  • Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or aged manure

  • pH: 6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)

  • Avoid soggy, compacted soil — these beauties like their space

Sunlight Needs:

  • Full sun to light shade — full sun brings out the strongest leaf colour

  • Prefers bright, open spaces with good airflow

🌸 Planting Instructions

Best Planting Time:

  • Late summer to early autumn (Feb–April) for winter colour

  • In warmer zones, you can plant into late autumn

Sowing Seeds:

  • Seed Trays: Sow indoors or in seed trays 6–8 weeks before transplanting

  • Transplant when seedlings are sturdy and have 4–6 true leaves

  • Spacing: 25–30 cm apart for lush, full heads

Germination Time:

  • 5–10 days at 18–24°C

  • Keep soil moist (but not soggy) during germination

💧 Watering & Fertilization

Watering:

  • Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist

  • Don’t let plants dry out, but avoid waterlogging

Fertilization:

  • At Planting: Use a balanced fertiliser (e.g. 3:1:5 or 6:3:4)

  • During Growth: Feed every 2–3 weeks until heads are full-sized — then ease off to encourage colour instead of leaves

Mulching:

  • Apply light organic mulch to keep roots cool and retain moisture

  • Keep mulch clear of plant stems

🐛 Pest & Disease Management

Common Pests:

  • Cabbage worms & aphids — remove manually or treat with organic sprays

  • Flea beetles — floating row covers work well for early protection

Common Diseases:

  • Downy mildew & leaf spot — space plants well and avoid overhead watering

  • Root rot in poorly drained soil

🌼 Colouring & Harvesting

Colour Development:

  • Pink, White or Red tones intensify with cold nights — chillier temps = bolder colour

  • Leaves form large, ruffled “blooms” that resemble flowers

Harvesting for Floristry:

  • Harvest when heads are firm and colour is vibrant

  • Strip lower leaves for clean stems

  • Vase life: 7–10 days with clean water and flower food

Fragrance:

  • No floral scent — but plenty of visual drama!

🌿 Garden Uses & Companion Planting

Companion Plants:

  • Lovely with pansies, violas, dusty miller, snapdragons, calendula, and ornamental grasses

  • Adds contrast and structure to soft winter flowers

Best Uses:

  • Ornamental beds and borders

  • Feature plants in pots and containers

  • Long-lasting cut stems for bouquets

  • Massed plantings for colour in winter displays
