🌿 Growing Conditions

✅ Climate

Thrives in cool to mild conditions, with ideal temperatures between 10–20°C.
Best grown during the cooler months across South Africa.
Avoid extreme heat and heavy frost.

✅ Soil Requirements

Prefers well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter.
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0).
Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.


🌱 Planting Instructions

✅ Best Planting Time

Autumn (March–May) for beautiful spring blooms.

✅ Preparing the Tubers

Soak tubers in lukewarm water for 4–6 hours before planting to encourage sprouting.
Allow to dry slightly before planting.

✅ Planting Depth & Spacing

Depth: 5–7 cm deep, claws facing downward.
Spacing: 10–15 cm apart.
Row Spacing: 25–30 cm between rows.


💧 Watering & Care

✅ Watering

Water regularly during establishment.
Keep soil evenly moist, but never waterlogged.
Reduce watering slightly once plants are established.

✅ Fertilising

At Planting: Add compost or a balanced organic fertiliser.
During Growth: Feed every 2–3 weeks with a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertiliser.
Avoid excessive nitrogen.

✅ Mulching

Apply a light mulch layer to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Aphids & Spider Mites – treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Slugs & Snails – protect young growth.

Blooms appear approximately 8–12 weeks after planting, typically in early spring.

Harvest when buds are soft and just beginning to open.
Cut early in the morning.
Place immediately into clean, cool water.

Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
Lift and dry tubers thoroughly.
