Bring bold, tropical-looking colour to your summer garden with Tigridia Mixed. Also known as the Mexican shell flower, one-day lily or sacred Aztec lily, Tigridia produces distinctive flowers in a lively mixture of red, yellow, pink, purple, orange and salmon tones.

Each flower may last for only a day, but established plants produce new blooms in succession, creating a colourful display throughout the flowering season. Plant the bulbs in groups for the strongest visual effect.

How to plant Tigridia bulbs

Choose a warm, sunny position with fertile, well-draining soil. Loosen the soil before planting and work in compost or well-rotted organic matter. Plant the bulbs approximately 5 cm deep and 10 cm apart, with the growing point facing upward.

Tigridia has relatively light foliage and looks especially attractive when planted towards the front of beds or among plants with fuller leaves. For a more impressive display, plant the bulbs in clusters rather than scattering them individually.

Watering and care

Water well after planting. During active growth, water regularly while allowing excess moisture to drain freely. When planted in the ground, a general guide is to water every three to four days during dry weather, adjusting for rainfall, temperature and soil type.

Avoid waterlogged conditions, as persistently wet soil can damage the bulbs. Remove spent flowers as required and allow the foliage to die back naturally so the bulbs can store energy for the following season.
