Why choose our peony roots?
Quality first: Vigorous, true-to-type roots from trusted growers.
Locally suited: Curated for SA’s cooler regions; guidance provided for warmer zones.
Long-lived value: Once established, peonies can flourish for decades with minimal fuss.
When to plant peonies (South Africa)
Best window: May to August while roots are dormant. Western Cape and other cool winter areas perform best. Warmer inland/coastal zones can still succeed with the right site.
Planting basics
Sun: 5–6+ hours of direct sun. Provide light afternoon shade in hot inland sites.
Soil: Free-draining, enriched with compost. Avoid waterlogged spots (raised beds help).
Depth: Plant shallow. Set the buds/“eyes” 2–3 cm below the surface in cool areas; in warmer areas, set eyes at or just below the surface. Planting too deep is the #1 cause of no flowers.
Spacing: 75–90 cm between plants for airflow and future size.
Water: Water in thoroughly, then keep evenly moist (never soggy) during establishment.
Care & expectations
“Sleep, creep, leap”: Year 1 modest growth, year 2 bigger clumps, year 3+ abundant blooms.
Feeding: Light, balanced, low-nitrogen feed in early spring; avoid heavy N.
Support: Stake tall stems in windy sites.
Cut back: After flowering, allow foliage to yellow naturally; cut back in late winter just before new shoots.
Chill requirement (performance note)
Peonies benefit from cool winters. They perform best in regions with reliable winter chill (e.g., many parts of the Western Cape and highveld gardens). In warmer microclimates, choose the coolest site you have: morning sun, good airflow, mulch to keep roots cool, and avoid reflected heat.
Troubleshooting
No flowers: Usually planted too deep, too much shade, or plants are still young.
Bud drop: Heat spikes or irregular watering—keep moisture even and mulch lightly.
Yellowing early: Poor drainage or overwatering—improve soil structure and watering rhythm.
