Amarine Bulbs (× Amarine) — Autumn Colour for South African Gardens
Meet Amarine (× Amarine)—a beautiful hybrid between Amaryllis belladonna and Nerine. These bulbs deliver elegant, trumpet-shaped blooms on strong stems in late summer to autumn, adding reliable colour just when many gardens are fading. Perfect for Western Cape Mediterranean climates and beyond, Amarines thrive in sunny, well-drained spots and make superb cut flowers.
Why plant Amarines
Autumn-flowering bulbs for extended seasonal colour
Large, showy heads (often in pinks and corals) on sturdy, wind-resistant stems
Excellent in borders, gravel gardens and containers
Drought-tolerant once established; best left undisturbed to naturalise
When to plant in South Africa
Plant late summer to early autumn (Feb–Apr) in frost-free areas. In colder regions, plant after the last frost and protect young growth from cold snaps. We ship in season nationwide so your bulbs arrive at the right time to plant.
How to plant Amarines
Sun & soil: Full sun; free-draining sandy or gritty soil
Depth: Set with the neck at or just above soil level
Spacing: 20–30 cm apart
Watering: Moderate while actively growing; keep on the drier side in dormancy
Feeding: A potassium-rich fertiliser during growth encourages bigger blooms
Do not disturb: Clumps flower best if left in place for several years
Great for cutting
Cut when the first florets open; remove lower foliage and place in clean water. Amarines pair beautifully with dahlias, cosmos and ornamental grasses for late-season arrangements.
