Ginger (Zingiber officinale) — Culinary Rhizomes for South African Gardens
Grow your own fresh, aromatic edible ginger at home. Our Zingiber officinale rhizomes are ideal for pots, greenhouse tunnels, and warm, frost-free beds, producing succulent young “baby ginger” in mid-season and fully mature roots by late summer to early autumn.
When to plant in South Africa
Plant in spring once soils warm (Aug–Oct), or later in frost-free regions. We ship nationwide in season so your rhizomes arrive ready to plant.
Why plant culinary ginger
Fresh, flavour-packed rhizomes for cooking, juicing and tea
Grows brilliantly in containers on patios or in tunnels
Low maintenance: loves warmth, moisture and filtered light
How to plant & care
Light: Bright, morning sun or dappled shade; avoid scorching afternoon sun
Soil: Rich, free-draining mix with compost (pH ~6–6.5)
Depth: Lay rhizomes 2–5 cm deep, buds (“eyes”) facing up
Spacing: 20–30 cm in beds; one sizeable piece per 25–30 cm pot
Watering: Keep evenly moist in growth; never waterlogged
Feeding: Light, regular feeding; switch to potassium-rich fertiliser to bulk up rhizomes
Harvest:
Baby ginger: from 4–5 months (tender, pale skins)
Mature roots: 8–10 months, when foliage yellows and dies back
Overwintering
In cold areas, lift and store a few rhizomes dry and replant next spring, or keep pots frost-free so clumps reshoot next season.
