Tecomaria capensis ‘Salmon’
A sun-loving, evergreen shrub that brings a burst of warm salmon-pink colour to the garden. Tecomaria ‘Salmon’ (commonly known as Cape Honeysuckle) is a fast-growing, free-flowering variety that thrives in South African gardens — especially in full sun and well-drained soil. Its vibrant tubular blooms attract sunbirds and butterflies, adding lively movement and colour throughout the warmer months.
🌸 Flowering
Produces masses of salmon-pink trumpet flowers from spring right through to late autumn, creating a long display of colour in the garden.
🌿 Growth Habit
A vigorous, multi-stemmed evergreen shrub reaching up to 2 – 3 m high and wide if left untrimmed. Can be pruned into a dense hedge, shaped as a feature shrub, or trained against a wall or trellis.
🌞 Position
Full sun is ideal for best flowering, but it will tolerate light shade. Perfect for warm, sunny borders or as a striking backdrop in mixed plantings.
🌱 Soil
Grows well in well-drained, compost-enriched garden soil. Tolerant of sandy soils and coastal conditions once established.
💧 Watering
Moderate water requirements. Water regularly during establishment and extended dry spells; once mature, it becomes fairly drought tolerant.
✂️ Pruning
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage new growth. Can be cut back harder in late winter if rejuvenation is needed.
🌼 Fertilising
Feed in spring and midsummer with a balanced fertiliser or compost mulch to promote lush foliage and continuous blooms.
