Pittosporum tobira – Coastal-tough, neat texture; ideal for wind-exposed sites.
Murraya (Orange Jasmine) – Fragrant flushes, compact habit; loves sun and warmth.
Westringia – Aussie rosemary; wind-hardy and low-maintenance.
Tecomaria (Cape Honeysuckle) – Indigenous, floriferous screen; birds & pollinators love it.

Buxus (Box) – Classic low hedges, edging and parterres.
Low Borders & Edging
Lavender – Fragrant edging that thrives in sun and clips neatly.
Agapanthus – Iconic SA border clumps; blue/white umbels and tough foliage.
Liriope / Mondo Grass – Shade-friendly, tidy borders for paths and beds.
Dietes – Architectural, water-wise clumps for mass planting.
Sun vs Shade – Plant the Right Spot
Full sun (6–8+ hrs): Viburnum odoratissimum, Syzygium, Pittosporum tobira, Westringia, Tecomaria, Lavender, Agapanthus.
Sun to part shade: Viburnum tinus, Murraya, Plumbago, Liriope, Dietes.
Coastal wind: Pittosporum, Westringia, Syzygium, Tecomaria.
Colder inland/frost: Viburnum tinus, Buxus (low hedges) with winter protection when young.
How Many Plants Do I Need?
Tall screens (2–3 m): space 0.8–1.2 m apart (closer = faster privacy).
Medium hedges (1–1.8 m): space 60–80 cm apart.
Low borders (30–60 cm): space 25–40 cm apart or 5–7 per metre for tight edging.
Planting, Clipping & Care
Soil: Well-drained, enriched with compost; mulch 5–7 cm to conserve moisture.
Watering: Keep evenly moist for 6–8 weeks after planting; then water deeply but less often.
Feeding: Slow-release fertiliser in spring; light top-ups mid-summer if needed.
First clip: Tip-prune young plants early to encourage branching and density.
Maintenance: Formal hedges: light trims every 6–10 weeks in the growing season; informal screens: 2–3 times per year.
