Planting Basics for Summer Bulbs
Light: Most summer bulbs prefer full sun, around 6–8 hours per day. Use light afternoon shade in very hot areas.
Soil: Plant into free-draining soil with added compost. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.
Depth: As a rule of thumb, plant bulbs around 2–3 times their height. Dahlia tubers are planted more shallowly, with the growing eye covered by about 3–5 cm of soil.
Water: Water in after planting, then keep evenly moist once active growth starts. Avoid overwatering dormant tubers.
Feed: Use a potassium-rich flower fertiliser during bud and bloom for stronger colour and better flowering.
Support: Taller dahlias, gladiolus and lilies may need staking, especially in windy gardens.

Dahlias: The Star of Summer Bulb Season

dinnerplate dahlias.
